Realistic art or abstract art, which is better?
Looking at Art:
Do you like to understand a work of art in a glance or do you prefer to have to study it before the subject is revealed to you? Would you like the art to replicate your world or to bring you to another world outside your everyday experience? An artist’s style is connected to the experience they wish the viewer to have. All of their choices in the creation of a piece of art will influence how you respond to the work. Therefore, although we may as viewers, prefer realistic or abstract art, the style chosen by an artist for creative expression is the best one for them.
Work in the Studio:
My art moves from realism to abstraction depending on the feelings I wish to convey. My main focus in painting is on people in unscripted moments. I represent them realistically so that the viewer will identify with them or relate to them as they might relate to a friend or relative. Far From Home is my grandson riding on a train after a tiring day. In my sculpture, I often abstract the figure or the face allowing lines, shapes and forms to become emphasized. Swirling edges draw attention around the three-dimensional work. In Duet, the implied motion invites the viewer to find two figures dancing together. However, because of the abstract style of the sculpture, anyone may bring their own interpretation to the piece.
