Are all artists storytellers?
Looking at Art:
Illustrations in books are tied to the stories told in the text, but what about other forms of art that have no passages accompanying them? It is particularly difficult to imagine a painting with colors and shapes that do not define objects, figures or landscapes as a story to be decoded by the viewer. However, I think all artists would agree that art is a vehicle for communication. Sometimes feelings which are undefinable in words can be expressed by art pieces, whether the artist is using paint, clay, film or installation, something they wish to convey is central their art.
Work in the Studio:
In the watercolor called Engaged, two people standing very close together are both texting on their cell phones. Although the closeness of their stance indicates they are intimate, they ignore each other, involved with others who are not present. My painting is meant to be a reflection of society and our increasing absorption with technology, which connects us to the world, while separating us from those around us.
