Is doubt part of the creative life?
Looking at Art:
“The creative life is one defined by insecurity, doubt and uncertainty” according to Ligaya Mishan in an article in the New York Times T Magazine. Annette Bening, the actress, said “We work in the dark-we do what we can-we give what we have. Our doubt is our passion, and our passion is our task. The rest is the madness of art.” There seems to be truth in these statements. Perhaps the doubt can also be thought of as self -criticism, and can lead a creative person to strive for solutions and new pathways that generate their next work. Although it may not be possible to see this striving in one example of their art, observing the works over time will hint at this searching, which I believe is essential to the creative process. Do you see evidence of the artist’s changing approach in the work of your favorite artists?
Work in the Studio:
My fascination with the portrait has encouraged me to search for new ways to present faces. Every person is physically different and every face reflects a personality and tells an individual story. I am always searching new ways to express the story I observe. The watercolor shown here is a disappearing face becomeing part of a landscape which I hope conveys a feeling.
