Is thinking the enemy of creativity?

Looking at Art:

If we are too rational, would we ever create art? Ray Bradbury said that “thinking is the enemy of creativity”. If two types of thought exist, rational thought and imagination, can they coexist peacefully, or does one need to dominate to get creative work done? Without logically thinking through the technical aspects of making art, perhaps art making could not take place. I believe creating a balance between these two ways of thinking allows the imagination to come up with the ideas that are actualized with a deliberate approach to the art materials. The greatest challenge might be to get these elements in balance. Are some artists more rational and some more imaginative? What do you think?

 Work in the Studio:

When I visited the Ringling Museum of Art recently, I took photos of their reproduction of the David sculpture by Michelangelo. I love that sculpture because of all of the beautiful forms within the piece. When I got home, I looked at the photos and wondered if it might be possible to represent those forms in a new way with the David remaining recognizable. The watercolor shown here is my interpretation of the sculpture. (The title is Reflection so rest assured the painting is not upside down.)

Betty Gerich, Artist, Painter and Sculptor

My studio work consists of sculpture inspired by the figure, paintings of people and drawings from a live model. Three college degrees trained me as an artist and a teacher. My background includes eleven solo exhibitions and my art has received numerous awards. Connecting with other artists and sharing ideas about the work is an ongoing passion.
