Is play part of serious art making?

Looking at Art:

I believe play is an indispensable part of the creative process. Playing around with ideas and materials can uncover unexpected possibilities. Sometimes looking at a subject from a different point of view can transform the serious into something whimsical or the lighthearted into the intense. Although art can invite you to think about momentous issues, it can also provide an escape from the serious events of the day. Perhaps none of this would be possible without the playful, creative mind at work. Do you think there is such a thing as serious play?

Work in the Studio:

Aromatherapy is a treatment for healing which involves aromatic, essential oils. The idea that fragrance might be a source of healing struck me as ironic and allowed me to come up with the idea for the following piece. The sculpture seen here is my whimsical interpretation of the treatment. Four noses revolve above a small cup which we can imagine holds the healing elixir. The noses take in the scent as the crank on the side of the piece is turned.
