Is Covid changing our art and culture?
Looking at Art:
When covid first hit, I was shocked to see Broadway theaters and major museums close for an entire season. Although they reopened with the hope that the crisis was over, theaters are closing again because of the spread of omicron. Artists and creative people as well as institutions are suffering from loss of income and opportunities. According to Brookings Research, “Any lasting damage to the creative sector will drastically undercut our culture, well-being, and quality of life.” I do know that philanthropic groups are watching and trying to help. The American Alliance of Museums is looking for action from Congress to provide economic relief for museums. Will this terrible period last? Will the arts in our culture survive as we have known it? Are you optimistic about your arts community?
Work in the Studio:
My art world is primarily the local art scene in Sarasota and Manatee Counties in Florida. I have watched the art institutions that are partially responsible for motivating my studio work suffer. The art centers have closed, and reopened events and exhibitions, requiring masks and at times proof of vaccination. Staff members have left and they have rehired while adding volunteers. I certainly hope they can survive and continue to provide the rich cultural environment we have enjoyed. The early sculpture shown here, represents both love and hope.
